Doheny Sunset*
Painted at "Weekend with the Masters"

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Doheny State Beach 5x7*

I just returned from Weekend with the Masters in Dana Point, California. Wow, what an exciting weekend with all kinds of great classes and demonstrations, from Richard Schmid, David Leffel, Dan Gerhartz, Scott Christensen, and many others. I taught 2 full days and did a sunrise demonstration on the first day. Everyone in my eyes had a wonderful time and the staff of Interweave did a great job organizing this massive event. I sold a couple of paintings including my auction piece, but kept a couple including this little study above, it is of Doheny State Beach from the resort we stayed at. Check out ebay for your chance to win this at auction starting September 30th, 2010.

"LA River Hues" oil 5"x10"

Some of the architecture of LA dates back to the turn of the century. This is just one of the old bridges spanning the LA River, many of which are pieces of art themselves.

I've been painting the last few days down in the LA River. It's a little bit of hidden nature in the middle of all that concrete, its wonderful. The painting above is the old footbridge that spans across the river east to west.

Fall is starting to settle in a bit and yesterday at the coast was just spectacular. I decided to drive down to paint and when I got there there was some fog, but as I rounded the Palos Verdes peninsula blue sky was showing through. I headed for Point Vicente which is a great spot with majestic cliffs and sparkling waters, I couldn't wait to start laying on the paint. The painting above is what came to be 2 hours later. 8"x10" on linen, I will make this larger, probably 16"x20" for my November show. If you are interested in this painting please contact me at 310-869-3200 or leave a comment.

Learn to Paint The Urban Landscape!

I will teach an Urban 2 Day Workshop in Los Angeles on November 20th & 21st, 2010. This is for intermediate to advanced painters, good drawing skills are a must. My focus will be showing the student how to create a good painting through proper design without become too tight, therefore allowing for fluid brush work and great overall mood. Cost per student $200. Max 10 students. Please contact me at the studio to reserve your spot, phone 310-869-3200.

Finally, I have had the chance to start going out and doing more urban paintings. The weather has cooled and it's nicer when you are standing on the concrete for 2 or 3 hours. This painting will be included in my "Painting a Week" on Ebay. Each miniature painting is listed as a 7 day auction. Click here. You can view my larger urban paintings on my website, anything from 8"x8" to 24"x30". Larger pieces are usually commissioned by collectors from the studies I have already completed. You can also email me to find out what is available if you don't see any on my site.

I have been to Canada and the Canadian Rockies quite a few times and each time is an experience I'll never forget. I have a dear friend named Liz Wiltzen living in Banff who is also a painter and each time I visit to paint we venture to these great spots just minutes from her home. The painting above is one such spot just on the edge of town at a place called Vermillion lakes. This was at around sunset, soft colors and gorgeous reflections stopped me in my tracks.

Thanks to all of you have visited my Ebay auctions. It has been a success and I will continue to post new pieces. "Rocky Shore" oil on linen, 6"x6" was painted on the shore in Palos Verdes, CA. This particular beach is covered in rocks and I love to paint rocks. It was an overcast day which brought out beautiful tones in the rocks and created a fabulous mood to the overall painting. Check out this painting on Ebay.
