If you haven't been by Maureen Murphy Fine Arts you still have time and there a few paintings still available. The show has been a great success and I would like to especially thank those collectors who came by and purchased their favorite painting! Don't miss it, the show closes December 31st!
I'm happy to announce my Feature Article in the December 2010 issue of SouthwestArt Magazine, called, In the Mood, by writer Norman Kolpas. Check it out and send me a comment I'd love to hear from you!
I decided to post 2 more pieces from my second Swedish trip, although these were done in December just before the snowfall. The first one is called "Invitation from the cold" and boy was it cold. A nice lady near by saw me painting this and invited me in for coffee when I finished, the Swedish love to entertain guests. The second painting is called "December" and show the typical color of homes in the Swedish country side. Both these paintings are available for purchase just email me or call at 310-869-3200.
SOLD "Birch Trees on the Baltic" is a 5"x7" Study I did while in Sweden on a painting trip. This place was just stunning and I stayed minutes from everything paintable. Fortunately, I had good friends who gave me a bed and great Swedish hospitality. Can't wait to go back! This painting is available on ebay as my Painting of the Week. Don't miss it!
Be sure to get you copy of "Painting Workshop with the Masters." This magazine coincides with "Weekend with the Masters" presented by American Artist Magazine. It is a special issue that includes a special DVD inside. As you may notice, I was surprised when it arrived at my door. Also, check out my feature article in the December issue of Southwest Art Magazine. I'm truly grateful to all the folks that made this happen!
I just saw a great exhibit at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. It is called America's Granduer and showcases the talent of one of my favorite artists Clyde Aspevig. Go see it! It is there till February.
This is a painting available at my show at Maureen Murphy Fine Arts. I painted this while on an outing with friends in the hills above Santa Barbara. It is looking towards the ocean on a beautiful afternoon.
I just painted this in Morro Bay . It was early morning around 8 and the mist from the large waves just outside the break were creating this moisture that just shrouded the scene in a light fog. I tell ya, nothing is better for the soul, than to get out and paint!
"Fall Light" 4"x6"* is my latest miniature painting done on location in Eaton Canyon. I went there this morning with my good friend and artist Richard Pina. This painting depicts the cool early morning colors in the shadows and the brilliant highlights on the rocks down in the wash. This painting will be available for auction. Click the ebay link.
This is one of my paintings for my upcoming show of new work starting in mid November at Maureen Murphy Fine Arts in Montecito, California. This paintings was done from a sunset study of some rolling California hills with warm glowing color. I will try to post more but I must paint!
I just returned from Weekend with the Masters in Dana Point, California. Wow, what an exciting weekend with all kinds of great classes and demonstrations, from Richard Schmid, David Leffel, Dan Gerhartz, Scott Christensen, and many others. I taught 2 full days and did a sunrise demonstration on the first day. Everyone in my eyes had a wonderful time and the staff of Interweave did a great job organizing this massive event. I sold a couple of paintings including my auction piece, but kept a couple including this little study above, it is of Doheny State Beach from the resort we stayed at. Check out ebay for your chance to win this at auction starting September 30th, 2010.
I've been painting the last few days down in the LA River. It's a little bit of hidden nature in the middle of all that concrete, its wonderful. The painting above is the old footbridge that spans across the river east to west.
Fall is starting to settle in a bit and yesterday at the coast was just spectacular. I decided to drive down to paint and when I got there there was some fog, but as I rounded the Palos Verdes peninsula blue sky was showing through. I headed for Point Vicente which is a great spot with majestic cliffs and sparkling waters, I couldn't wait to start laying on the paint. The painting above is what came to be 2 hours later. 8"x10" on linen, I will make this larger, probably 16"x20" for my November show. If you are interested in this painting please contact me at 310-869-3200 or leave a comment.
I will teach an Urban 2 Day Workshop in Los Angeles on November 20th & 21st, 2010. This is for intermediate to advanced painters, good drawing skills are a must. My focus will be showing the student how to create a good painting through proper design without become too tight, therefore allowing for fluid brush work and great overall mood. Cost per student $200. Max 10 students. Please contact me at the studio to reserve your spot, phone 310-869-3200.
Finally, I have had the chance to start going out and doing more urban paintings. The weather has cooled and it's nicer when you are standing on the concrete for 2 or 3 hours. This painting will be included in my "Painting a Week" on Ebay. Each miniature painting is listed as a 7 day auction. Click here. You can view my larger urban paintings on my website, anything from 8"x8" to 24"x30". Larger pieces are usually commissioned by collectors from the studies I have already completed. You can also email me to find out what is available if you don't see any on my site.
I have been to Canada and the Canadian Rockies quite a few times and each time is an experience I'll never forget. I have a dear friend named Liz Wiltzen living in Banff who is also a painter and each time I visit to paint we venture to these great spots just minutes from her home. The painting above is one such spot just on the edge of town at a place called Vermillion lakes. This was at around sunset, soft colors and gorgeous reflections stopped me in my tracks.
Thanks to all of you have visited my Ebay auctions. It has been a success and I will continue to post new pieces. "Rocky Shore" oil on linen, 6"x6" was painted on the shore in Palos Verdes, CA. This particular beach is covered in rocks and I love to paint rocks. It was an overcast day which brought out beautiful tones in the rocks and created a fabulous mood to the overall painting. Check out this painting on Ebay.
Urban landscapes lately have been some of my favorite to do. "7am Montrose" is a piece I did a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning. Sometimes these landscapes are easier to complete on a quiet day. I love the abstract design in this particular piece which works well on a square format. This piece is available through my studio for $1400 framed. I can be reached at 310-869-3200.
Things are getting busier now, I'm trying to finish paintings for my show coming this November, and Weekend with the Masters workshops coming up next month, should be a fun time. I've decided to update my website with a slightly updated home page and new links, should be up soon. I'm adding "little Jewels" a page link showing some smaller field studies, some for sale and some not. I have a large inventory of smaller paintings I have kept through the years that not many have seen, so I decided to show them. Above is one such piece, "Sunlit Falls" 6"x8".
My Ebay auction has been launched. Called, "A Painting a Week", this is a new series of miniatures no more than 6"x6" that I have decided to put up for sale auction style. This gives the new collector a foot in the door into collecting at a great starting price. It is also a chance for new and existing collectors to bid on some really special pieces not normally sold outside of my studio.
My first in series is, "Creekside Colors", oil on panel, 6"x6". Click here
I'm finally going to start blogging again. I started my blog last year then I got sidetracked. Well, Im having a show coming up in November at Maureen Murphy Fine Arts in Montecito, CA. It's where Oprah has her 50 million dollar palace. Hey, maybe she'll come to the show. The painting above is one for the show, one of 20 I'm getting ready.
