"Above Big Sur" 

A step by step from study to studio painting

 Step 1

The first step is the block in with transparent washes 

of similar colors to the finished painting,  keeping in

mind the values that must be established.  The white 

of the linen will serve as my lightest value and the 

darkest value will be the forground bush on the left.

Hint: completely covering the canvas with paint 

during this stage will give you a better chance

 at nailing down your value.

Happy New Year everyone!  It's been a bit 

since my last post.  The holidays were busy 

and I was wrapping up last minute sales,  no

pun intended!  

I plan on posting demos soon,  but the 

weather was a bit tough,  lots of wet rainy

days and very cold.  It's now starting to 

warm up and hopefully in a week or so I 

have the first step by step demo posted.

Also,  If any of you are on Facebook and

way to see what many artists are doing 

these days.

"Surf Study at Sunset" 

You cannot beat the California Coast for some great

painting.  Mild weather makes it ideal to paint year 

round. 

"San Francisco Street Study"

I painted this during a summer trip to paint urban scenes

of the iconic city of San Francisco.  In all,  I painted close

to a dozen paintings depicting the light and mood of this

beautiful city.  

It was a challenge painting here, of course traffic is scary

and you have to find a parking spot that you can stay in 

for at least 2 hours without it costing you an arm and a 

leg.  It didn't matter how tough though,  I was determined

to get some work done!

Just recently painted in Big Sur,  California after
exhibiting in Laguna Beach at the 14th Annual
Plein Air Invitational.
 

 I've been on the road for almost 2 months

painting outdoors in Wyoming, Utah, Arizona
and California,  so now it's time to concentrate on 

some large scale works in the studio.

I was honored to receive Best of Show in

the Quick Draw at 14th Annual Laguna Beach 

Plein Air Invitational taking place this week 

October 14 - 21, 2012.

 

Back from teaching in Vermont  last week and 

traveling to Wyoming,  Utah and Arizona for the 

past month.  It was a fantastic trip with stunning 

scenery and good times!  I will be posting new

paintings soon!
